One of my goals for 2018 was to create a space for writing, thinking, and generally sharing updates that felt roomier than Twitter, less performative than Medium, and was less subject to the whims and business models of tech companies than both. Looking around, I quickly developed a crush on Ghost primarily for its gorgeous editor and overall minimalism, but the fully hosted version was a little too rich for my freelancer blood.

In the last few days of the year, with a brain too mushy to do real work anyway, I finally got around to setting up a self-hosted instance. I used this one-click button for the original deployment, and then followed this tutorial to upgrade to Ghost 2.0.

Thanks to Diana and Mike for the renewed inspiration, and Gary for pointing out that I could save $30/month by self-hosting.
