I started doing weekly check-ins as suggested Edlyn back in 2015. For 3 years, we scheduled a meeting almost every week to review what I had accomplished and learned that week, and what I would try to focus on next week. Even after Edlyn got a job (😢 for me but 💸 for her), I've kept up the tradition of writing these weekly updates. This year, inspired by Mike's Monday Updates, I'm going to try sharing them semi-publicly.
What I Worked On
Teach the 1K: I spent a whole day this week working with Gary on our upcoming seminar/workshop about how to design and teach an experiential course around the fundamentals of entrepreneurship. We have been steadily exploring/making progress on this idea for months, and we can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel (which is good news, because the seminar is next week).
D&S Project: Continuing to work on an informal report for Data & Society about misinformation on WeChat. Wrestling with the scope of this project has been really challenging.
Magpie Kingdom/Writing: I'm mostly ramping down Magpie work for now, but I still spent some time wrangling finance stuff this week, as well as working on edits for an upcoming piece for Logic Magazine (which I will file 🤞🏼today!) I really love the subject matter, but it's been a beast to write—last week I wailed to my editor that at this particularly cloudy intersection of cultures and subcultures, "the explanations have explanations!"
Personal: During the last few days of 2018, I set my normal work aside and instead focused on slapping together this (!) blog, reviewing 2018 personally and with my partner, and cleaning my apartment. Also: hosted an impromptu NYE dinner party, had a belated anniversary dinner at Contra.
Habits: Cooked 3/7 dinners (1 with friends). Didn't exercise at all 😅
Watching: Finished Season 2 of Marvel's Runaways, started Season 2 of Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Both are great! Also, still thinking about how great Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse was.
Reading: Sick by Porochista Khakpour, The Value of Everything by Mariana Mazzucato
Playing: a couple hours of Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden, Into the Breach (someone recently called me out for having logged 75 hours on this game, which is what happens when you play it for 15 minutes every day since launch)
- Rather than having "resolutions" this year, I'm trying out having a set of routines and rules that I tweak based on data about what's working vs. not. For example, a resolution to wake up earlier becomes a rule (get out of bed without hitting snooze every morning). Eager to see how this works.
- My main projects for next week are pulling off the Teach the 1K seminar and setting goals/intentions for 2019. I'll also need to prepare for teaching my next round of workshops with Subculture, which start the week after!
- Outside of work, I'm looking forward to: continuing to make this blog inhabitable, the start of the winter season of my CSA, and getting rid of an unneeded dining set that's been shoved into the corner of our living room since we moved in.
